FIA - Research - Pygmalion

Pygmalion

According to the Greco-Roman myth, Pygmalion, a sculptor, created an ivory statue representing his ideal woman - and fell in love with his own creation. The goddess Venus -the Latin equivalent of Greek Aphrodite- granted Pygmalion's prayers and gave life to the statue.

When we considered studying the influence of audiovisual media on psychological development, we applied this myth, metaphorically, to our object of study. Our statue (the media) may come to life as a goddess - or as a demon. The social community (our Pygmalion) has the chisel in its hands. Society must shove aside its temper, now apocalyptic - now integrated, now fearful - now vindicative, and adopt a creative and constructive stand in order to assume Pygmalion's role towards its media and its children.

In order to better negotiate this road, in 1992 Fundación Infancia y Aprendizaje started promoting a line of research in collaboration with other institutions. We sum them up briefly below, in inverse chronological order.
