Este libro trata del papel que juega en las ciencias sociales -en especial en la psicología- la investigación guiada por una vocación comparativa, así como de su relevancia para el conocimiento básico. La tarea de construir ese conocimiento básico en las ciencias sociales requiere una comprensión de los procesos generales de pensamiento que siguen los investigadores cuando establecen comparaciones entre personas, grupos o sociedades.

La naturaleza autónoma de los seres humanos plantea unos problemas a su metodología científica que otras ciencias no necesitan tener en cuenta. Los seres humanos tanto en su calidad de individuos como en su calidad de componentes de organizaciones sociales- se fijan, siguen, logran o abandonan objetivos de diferentes tipos. Actúan continuamente siguiendo alguna meta orientada al futuro. Este aspecto de la vida humana requiere ser contemplado por alguna ciencia que busque comprender la esencia de los seres humanos.

La psicología cultural del ser humano dada su apertura al complejo significado de los fenómenos psicológicos- es actualmente la disciplina que lidera la creación de una metodología rigurosamente científica que unifique las técnicas cualitativas y cuantitativas en un esquema general capaz de dar sentido al ser humano en sus contextos culturales.
